Stone Setting 101: Custom Bezels for Cabochons - January

Enter the world of gemstone jewelry with this custom stone setting metalsmithing workshop in our professional metalsmithing jewelry school in Louisville! Students will learn how to make custom bezels for cabochons.  At the end of class, students will have completed a sterling silver stone pendant with our signature bail.

We will cover:

  • Bezel sizing and fitting
  • Bezel soldering
  • Making a wire bail
  • Hammer texturing and stamping
  • Cabochon setting
  • Polish and finish work

Class is 8 hours with a 30 minute break for lunch. We have a mini fridge and microwave, a separate break room and a deck with a mountain view where you can eat and relax on your break. We also have Nespresso coffee, tea, and snacks available for purchase.

Prerequisite: Metals 1 or equivalent

Tools and Materials

Tools needed: You will need to bring your own KN95 or N95 mask to use while polishing.  If you do not have one, we have them for sale for $5 (limit 1 per person).

Materials Fee will depend on the stones selected and the amount of silver used.  A selection of stones will be available for purchase at the beginning of class.  Silver will be charged at $1.50/gram.  Cash or check accepted.

Last day to cancel for a full refund is January 22, 2022. We will email you 5 days before class with all the details that you need for the start of class.

About the instructor, Liz Covert:

Liz Covert

Liz honed her skills while earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in small metals and sculpture. Inspired by the world around her, she continued her education with a Masters in Cultural Studies. Liz’s extensive experience in metal work includes welding, blacksmithing, and a career in sculpture conservation. Her teaching background ranges from first grade art classes to private jewelry lessons and has spanned over a decade. 

Liz is the owner and creator behind Covert Metals, a one-woman metal working studio located in Denver, Colorado that has roots reaching from New York to Texas. Covert Metals emphasizes unique one-of-a-kind design that melds contemporary styling with hand-forged detailing. 

Some of Liz’s favorite things are printed books and sci-fi in all forms. When she’s not at the bench she’s outside hiking, running, or cycling. Liz also loves food in all forms and flavors, and especially likes to cook. Her work is a reflection of all the things she enjoys wrapped up in the importance of quality over quantity.
