Always wanted to work with gold but not sure where to start? In this one-day jewelry class, students will learn the ancient Korean technique of Keum-Boo; which is applying thin sheets of 24k gold to silver using heat.

Students will learn how to depletion-guild sterling silver, apply 24k gold foil, and use patina to create black and gold contrast. 

At the end of class, students will have completed a pair of dangle earrings and pendant. 

Class duration: 6 hours with a 30-minute break for lunch.

Tools and Materials: 

Tools will be provided.  You need to bring your own mask as well as a N95 or KN95 mask for polishing.

Materials fees: (bring cash - exact change is appreciated)

  • $40 for gold foil and studio materials
  • Students can bring a 2" x 2" sterling silver sheet (any gauge between 24 and 18) or they can buy a 2”x 2” piece of 22 ga silver for an additional $20

About the instructor, Chris Weston

Chris WestonChris Weston graduated from Haywood Community College in North Carolina with an A.A.S. degree in Professional Crafts/Jewelry. He also has a B.A. in English from Dartmouth College and an M.A. in TESL/Secondary Education from the University of New Mexico. He has taken workshops around the country from notable jewelry artists that include Charles Lewton-Brain, Carrie Adell, Julia Turner, Chris Darway, and Sarah Obrecht, among others. In 2000, he attended The Istituto Pietro Selvatico, in Padova, Italy, where he studied goldsmithing with Graziano Visintin.


He began his teaching career in Japan in 1985, and eventually transitioned from teaching English as a foreign language to teaching high school art in 2001, when he became a high school art teacher for Las Cruces Public Schools. While in Las Cruces, he also started teaching adult jewelry classes in the continuing education program for Dona Ana Community College.

Since moving to Colorado in 2016, he has taught jewelry workshops for Boulder Metalsmithing Association and Lifelong Learning. He is currently teaching specialty workshops at Silver Peak Studio.
