Enter the world of making metal jewelry with Metals 1: Intro to Metalsmithing.  This introductory 8-hour class (two Mondays, 4 hours each) gives you the foundational skills of metalsmithing jewelry and is the prerequisite for our more advanced classes. 

This workshop is jam-packed with information to get you introduced to the world of metalsmithing without a huge time commitment! In addition to learning safety procedures, you will learn the fundamentals of metalsmithing. At the end of class, you will have made a textured 7 mm sterling silver ring band with your choice in size and texture and a copper pendant necklace that is hand-sawn and hand-textured.

We will cover:

  • Studio safety and ergonomics
  • Sawing techniques
  • Hammer texturing and stamping
  • Filing and sanding
  • Basics of soldering
  • Texturing metal with a rolling mill and hammers
  • How to remove fire-scale
  • Patina options
  • How to use a flex-shaft

Class Duration: Two Mondays, October 17 and 24 from 10:00-2:00.  Students must be able to attend both sessions. No credits or transfers will be given for missed classes.

Tools and Materials

Tools will be provided

Materials kit: $25 (silver, copper, solder, flux, saw blades, and use of all tools and equipment)

About the instructor, Kenzie Nelson

Kenzie NelsonKenzie has been enveloped by art and art making her entire life and loves nothing more than connecting with others through the act of creating. After taking an introduction to metalsmithing class in her first year of college, she became infatuated with the medium. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Colorado State University and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a concentration in metalsmithing and jewelry making. She loves sharing her passion with others and has teaching experience ranging from K-12 art, museum education classes, as well as collegiate level metalsmithing courses.

Her work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. in curated and juried exhibitions, most recently in The Feminist Art Museum’s Protest and Protect and the Greater Denton Arts Council’s Materials: Hard and Soft.
