Intro to Metalsmithing: Ring Only - Evening Session October 17 & 24
Enter the world of making metal jewelry with our "ring only" Intro to Metalsmithing (Metals 1) class. This introductory 2-week weekday evening class gives you the foundational skills of metalsmithing jewelry and is the prerequisite for our more advanced classes.
This workshop is jam-packed with information to get you introduced to the world of metalsmithing without a huge time commitment! In addition to learning safety procedures, you'll learn the fundamentals of metalsmithing and at the end of class will have made a textured 7 mm sterling silver ring band with their choice in size and texture.
You will learn:
- Studio safety and ergonomics
- Sawing techniques
- Hammer texturing and stamping
- Filing and sanding
- Basics of soldering
- Texturing metal with a rolling mill and hammers
- How to remove fire-scale
- Patina options
- How to use a flex-shaft
Details:
- 6 contact hours, ages 14+ located at the Silver Peak Studio Classroom 100.5 E. Cleveland St. Lafayette 80026
- Two Thursdays October 17 & 24 from 6-9 p.m. Must be able to attend both sessions as no make-ups will be given.
- # student: 3 minimum, 6 maximum
- Materials fee is $30 for metal and studio materials, Intro to Metalsmithing workbook, and use of tools. This is due at the beginning of the first class via cash, check, or Venmo.
- Each student will work at their own dedicated jeweler's bench.

About the instructor, John Sullivan
John Sullivan is an artist, metalsmith, jeweler, and educator, whose work focuses on psychology, neuropsychology, and interpersonal relationships. Working as a contemporary artist and metalsmith, John explores the themes and issues surrounding dysfunctional relationships, psychological disorders, and the transformative process of healing. John was most recently an Affiliate Instructor of Metalsmithing and Jewelry and a Studio Technician at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, Colorado.
He attended graduate school at the State University of New York, New Paltz; the number one Metalsmithing program at a public university in the country. Prior to graduate school, John was the Sponsor Coordinator and a board member of the Colorado Metalsmithing Association. |
John Sullivan has exhibited at a number of venues internationally including Alliages (France), Munich (Germany), Madrid (Spain), Brooklyn Metal Works (NY), New York City Jewelry Week (NY), Art Works (CO), Gallery 1505 (CO), The Downtown Artery (CO), Clara Hatton Gallery (CO), The Merchant Room (CO), Glass Box Gallery (CO), the Colorado State University Art Department Gallery (CO), and online exhibitions through Ethical Metalsmiths and Splop Design. John’s work has also been published in SNAG’s Maker Profile of the Week, www.artsthread.com, NICHE magazine, and the CSU Collegian.
John is the recipient of a graduate study scholarship by SUNY New Paltz, the Graduate Student Research and Creative Projects Award for 2019 and 2020, the David ’05 and Sara ’10 Walton Metal Thesis Support Fund, and the Student Sculpture winner for the 2016 NICHE Awards.
