Learn how to connect metal without soldering! The beauty of riveting (aka "cold connections") is that you do not need a torch or solder to connect metal, and this technique can be easily done at home with minimal tools.

You will learn how to hand make rivets with brass, copper, and bronze wire as well as learn design and layout techniques. Each student will leave with at least one completed piece of jewelry.

We will cover:

  • Tools and materials needed for riveting
  • Overview of the 4 different types of rivets: standard, tube, flush, and decorative
  • Design layout
  • Measuring
  • Drilling
  • Setting rivets and cleanup

      Details:

      • 8 contact hours, ages 14+ located at the Silver Peak Studio Classroom 100 1/2 E. Cleveland St Lafayette 80026
      • Sunday, August 18, 9:00-5:00 
      • # students: 3 minimum, 6 maximum
      • Materials fee is $30 which includes metal and studio materials. Due at the beginning of class via cash, check, or Venmo.
      • Each student will work at their own dedicated jeweler's bench. 
      • Prerequisite: none

      About the instructor, Alec Schweiger

      Alec SchweigerAlec has an MFA with an emphasis in Metals and Jewelry from Colorado State University-Fort Collins, and has been teaching metalsmithing at the collegiate level (CSU) since 2019.  He received a work study scholarship to the Penland School of Craft to study under Kim Cridler, as well as learning from Navajo Silversmithing masters Allison and Trent Lee.  

      His "why" is described as being an extremely curious person who has always been driven to figure out how things work or how they are made.

      Alec has a passion for teaching and is thrilled by the opportunity to share his experiences and skills.

      A few of his favorite things are: disc golf, golf, and jamming to vinyl with his wife, Emma, and dog, Micah.
